Lonely Man Shares Turkey with Barefoot Boy, a Year Later They Celebrate Thanksgiving as Family

A lonely man who had spent every holiday by himself decided to share his Thanksgiving meal with a young, barefoot boy he met on the street. By the following year, he had found a family in that boy and his mother, sharing every holiday with them.

The day before Thanksgiving, Michael overheard his colleagues discussing their holiday plans. Some were returning to their hometowns, some going to the lake, and others planning stays at luxurious hotels. But Michael had no one to celebrate with—no family of his own and no girlfriend.

If something was worth celebrating, Michael typically treated himself to a solo dinner at a nice restaurant or an impromptu trip to Vegas. That year, he planned to share the holiday with a single friend, but, at the last moment, his friend canceled, choosing instead to spend Thanksgiving with a new romantic interest.

Thanksgiving arrived, and as Michael looked at the food he had bought, he realized he’d prepared far too much for one person. An idea struck him—why not share this meal with the people at the homeless shelter he passed every day on his way home?

All afternoon, he cooked his favorite Thanksgiving dishes. He roasted a turkey, made an apple pie, and prepared a hearty beef and mushroom casserole. “I should have done this years ago,” he thought, smiling as he packed everything into containers to take to the shelter.

At the shelter, Michael invited everyone to share the meal. “Wow!” a boy exclaimed. “I’ve never tasted food like this before!” Michael promised to continue bringing meals during the holidays, as he noticed a quiet boy sitting alone in the corner, barefoot and withdrawn.

Michael plated a generous serving of turkey and approached the boy. “Here you go,” he said gently. The boy took the plate with misty eyes, saying, “Thank you. My mom used to make food like this, but now she’s too busy.”

“Where’s your mom?” Michael asked.

“She works all day, saving up so we can afford a home. She drops me off here in the mornings and picks me up at night.” The boy’s story touched Michael deeply, reminding him of his own childhood. His mother had left him with relatives to work, and in time, she never came back. After his aunt and uncle passed, he was left with no family at all.

Determined to change this boy’s future, Michael promised to help him. That night, he waited at the shelter until the boy’s mother arrived. When she did, Michael offered her a well-paying position as his assistant, explaining how her son had shared how hard she worked. Moved to tears, she accepted.

A year later, Michael sat at his own dining table, surrounded by the boy, Damon, and his mother, Lindy. He no longer had to spend the holidays alone, as he and Lindy had fallen in love and were now married.

“Should we say grace?” Lindy asked, smiling.

Michael held their hands and prayed, “Thank you, God, for this home, the food we enjoy today, and most of all, for the family You led me to. I’m grateful to no longer be alone.”

That night, the three of them stayed up watching movies, eventually falling asleep in matching pajamas on the living room floor, wrapped in each other’s warmth.
